What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol (File Transfer Protocol, FTP) is a set of standard protocols for file transfer on the network. FTP allows users to communicate with another host by means of file operations (such as file addition, deletion, modification, checking, and transmission, etc.). However, the user does not really log in to the computer he wants to access and becomes a full user. The FTP program can be used to access remote resources to realize the user's round-trip file transfer, directory management, and access to e-mail, etc. even though the two computers may be equipped with different Operating system and file storage method.
The goal of FTP is to improve file sharing, provide indirect use of remote computers, and make storage media transparent to users and transfer data reliably and efficiently. It can manipulate any type of file without further processing, just like MIME or Unicode.
Introduction to NAS
Network-attached storage (NAS) is a file-level (as opposed to block-level storage) computer data storage server connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS is specialized for serving files either by its hardware, software, or configuration. It is often manufactured as a computer appliance – a purpose-built specialized computer.
NAS is a dedicated data storage server. It is data-centric, completely separating storage devices from servers and centralizing data management to free up bandwidth, improve performance, reduce total cost of ownership, and protect investments. Its cost is far lower than using server storage, while its efficiency is far higher than the latter.

How to Enable FTP Service on Synology NAS?
The NAS itself is capable of supporting multiple protocols (such as NFS, CIFS, FTP, HTTP, etc.) and can support a variety of operating systems. The following section will guide you on how to set up the FTP protocol for Synology NAS.
Before You Do
Before starting enabling WebDav protocol on your Synology NAS, you need to:
- Set up your Synology NAS first.
- Install DSM(Synology Diskstation Manager) on your Synology NAS.
- Set Up your Synology NAS to be accessible over the Internet.
First, you need to enable the FTP service on your Synology NAS before you can use FTP to transfer any data. The following section explains how to configure the basic FTP service.
Step 1. Sign in to DSM with an account, which belong to the administrators group.
Step 2. Click on the Control Panel option on the desktop.
Step 3. Click on File Services under the Control Panel.
Step 4. After clicking on File Services, you will enter in the following interface. Here selects the FTP option from the options button at the top, tick the Enable FTP service (No encryption) option and enter in the Port number settings of FTP and click Apply to save the changes.
Notes:
- Since we are here to set up FTP protocol for NAS, we won’t cover the other settings here.
- As long as you tick the Enable FTP service (No encryption) option, some options will be checked automatically. If you don’t need to make special settings, you don’t need to make any changes.
